Re-wiring your brain - from pessimism to optimism!

After completing a full and energizing weekend of Wellness Coach training (part 1 I might add..and can't wait to complete the remainder of the course!), I found myself feeling in a really invigorating place.
From the moment I walked into the conference room full of people who were also completing the workshops, I could feel the positive energy, the open-mindedness, the passion, the want to grow as a person and professional and the immense desire to help others get the very best of themselves.

I can tell you - this was not a space full of doom and gloom or people complaining about the shocking train ride into the concrete jungle of the city or the thick books of paperwork we had to get through - but of people who were genuinely excited to be there.
We sat down at 9 am sharp, with pens in hand and listened with intent to the insight and how to's of a career or skill set we each hoped to develop.........

Much of the framework for Wellness Coaching is based on 'Positive Psychology', an area which many scientists and professionals have researched it's effects on people and their ability to carry out day to day tasks.

According to Dr. Martin Seligman (a pioneer in the field of the elements required for well being), we all have the ability to be optimistic about life. He found that each of us are born with an innate level of optimism, and throughout life depending on our environment and the experiences we go through, this optimism can turn into more pessimism - some developing into severe mental illness. He suggested that to 're-shape', 'heal' and in a sense 're-wire' our brains to be more resilient and optimistic about life, we need to think about the following elements:

Positive emotions - surprise; we need to experience more positive emotions to over-come the negative thoughts each day.
How do we learn to do this to the point that we can self regulate? Start by writing down 3 positive events that happened to you each day before you go to bed. Apparently, for each negative emotion, we need to have 3 positive emotions to re-balance - the reason being that unfortunately negative emotions tend to hang around for longer. So - get that gratitude journal cranking again! If you've had a bad day, I'd challenge you to think harder to write down more positive events to balance it out (ANYTHING - e.g the weather, a smile form a stranger, you letting someone drive in front of you at the merging lane on the way to work, a nice, crispy apple you had today). Practice makes perfect - so do this each day for a couple of weeks and reflect on the difference.

(www.positivityratio.com - a great site to test your in-built ratio of optimism vs. pessimism).

Engagement - The more regularly we engage in things that give us a sense of 'flow', the higher our sense of well being and outlook on life.
When we engage in things that we find ourselves getting completely absorbed in, challenged, feeling as if we felt a sense of 'hey - that was fun' or 'when can I do that again?', and something that giving us a sense of jumping out of bed each day to participate in - we've found our flow, similar to a passion. It might be something that is totally irrelevant to anything else we do in our day to day things, but just something that we can lose ourselves in - and do it regularly! (Think long runs, writing, meditation, reading, singing........). Think about creating a 'vision board'; and posting photos, images, quotes, words or mementos of the things you enjoy doing to get you to focus on the things that might give you your flow.

Positive relationships - Arguably the biggest and most necessary - the types of relationships we have in our lives can impact greatly on our outlook.
Think about the relationships that  are important to you, circles of friends, community groups, family - Which of these generally make you feel good about yourself and are supportive? - Which of these perhaps do you not feel supported by? is this a relationship you wish to continue? Who do you look up to in your life and why?

Meaning - Meaning is how we make 'sense' of the world - finding this reason why we get out of bed and what makes us tick is extremely helpful in getting us to achieve the things we want because it gives them meaning and value.
Ask yourself - what really matters to you? If you could do anything you wanted (with no financial, social, work etc. barriers), what would it be? What do you hope will be your impact on the world? When you think about what is important to your life, question yourself as to why it really matters?

Achievement - Having a sense of accomplishment and success in being able to reach your goals gives you the confidence to try again! The more success we experience - the more likely we are to feel optimistic about life and a greater sense of well being.
Start by setting yourself one or two small, achievable goals each week to build your confidence in your abilities, your satisfaction with life and your place in the world. This could be something as simple as 'I will have breakfast each day this week', or 'I will walk on Monday, Wednesday and Friday this week for 45minutes at my lunch break'.
(Check out the VIA Authentic happiness, character strengths tests to see which are your best traits!).

According to Dr. Seligman, by working on all of the above regularly, we are more likely to be resilient when things don't necessarily go our way, build on our own strengths and values, cultivate and enjoy the things that  are going well in our lives, have an increased level of hope and optimism, have an increased sense of empowerment, and be more grateful for the things around us - positive and negative!

Sounds exciting doesn't it! It all comes back to the idea that we  are responsible for and can control the way we react to and think about life. Love it or hate it - it's up to us!

Confidence is paramount - How to bring it back!

Confidence: Confidence is a pretty broad term and can be difficult to define as it's so personal. Most people see confidence as having a belief in yourself, another person or an idea. When a person is confident, they are showing that they have faith in their talents, abilities and personal strength.

Having confidence in ourselves can affect our entire life! When we know and appreciate who we are, we feel great about ourselves and we make better choices and better decisions.
When we make better choices and better decisions, we create a better life for ourselves.
When we create a better life, we are much happier.
Everything is based on our self-confidence!

Knowing how important it is to have confidence, I know that this is an area I struggle with. Sometimes I am my own worst enemy - listening to the inner voice inside my head telling me that 'I am not good enough', or that I will fail. The thing is - if I let myself listen to this voice,  there is no way that I will be able to live the life I've always imagined. I wouldn't push myself to take on new challenges, I'd talk myself out of being able to do a job/duty/role that I am very capable of and make myself anxious over what people thought of me to the point where it was often easier to just stay home than go out and make decisions or perform a role I thought I couldn't do as well as I should be.

When we are first born, we have LOADS of confidence. It is only as we grow older and experience a variety of different situations and events that we get our confidence ‘sapped’ out of us from the impact that the environment has on us.

We can lose confidence by a variety of situations, some could include the following examples:
  • being criticized by others
  • when we have negative people in our lives. It’s very common for women to have men in their lives that out them down and belittle them, breaking down their confidence because they THEMSELVES lack confidence.
  • negative self talk, demeaning yourself by saying things like, “I’m stupid,“ “loser” “I KNEW it!”
  • negative body image because of what society dictates we “should” look like
  • not achieving the goals that we set for ourselves (consciously or sub-consciously)
When we lose our confidence, we start to have some of the following thoughts and responses…
  • not believing in yourself
  • not loving yourself
  • fear of public speaking
  • fear of meeting new people
  • fear of conversation with others
  • not being able to say no to others
  • not being able to get what you want
  • feelings of worry, guilt , anxiety, panic
  • fear of leaving your comfort zone because your lack of confidence is holding you back

Of course we are not going to be living the life that we dream of, if we are always held back by the thought that we cannot do it!

The great things is that by taking control of our thoughts, we can improve our confidence at any age, regardless of our experiences.

Here are a few tricks to help you develop that confidence -
- Walk tall. It's amazing how you can actually trick your brain into thinking that you are feeling confident by the way you walk and hold yourself. If you sit cross armed, eyes looking down, shoulders hunched and palms clenched together, your brain is sent back messages to say that you are protecting yourself from something. Try taking a big breathe, pulling your shoulders back & down, straightening your back, holding you head up and smiling to yourself - the opposite should occur and your subconscious starts to believe you are relaxed and more confident!

- Smile! In a similar way to above, your body can be tricked into thinking it feels a different way. Think about how you feel when you're happy or smiling. Instantly you begin to relax and your mind seems to zone out from the negative things around you.

- Throw on something that makes you feel great! That could be some sneaky gorgeous lingerie (I know, only you know what you're wearing, but it's as if you have a little secret that nobody else knows about, that you feel a sense of cool, sexy confidence!), your favorite shoes, a new hair style, some new nail polish or your favorite outfit. When you feel good, your confidence most definitely lifts in response. Compare when you're at home in your PJ's, no make-up and un-brushed teeth, to when you're heading out to dinner with a friend. You'd obviously wear different clothes, and your body language and mindset are totally different!

- Take notice of the negative voice in your head. When you are aware of yourself thinking negative thoughts (your body language will often reflect this), take a stand against it! Changing your thought processes can ACTUALLY change your life - I could worry about what each member of my office is thinking about how well I'm doing my job (I'm sure the frown on their face is aimed at my ability to do my job and not at the naughty year 7 that was just told off for bullying other kids - NOT LIKELY!). We let our brains think the worst sometimes, which is not helpful at all. Try thinking about the positive things you have achieved, make a mental list of these before you dwell on the one or two small things you may still be learning to do.

- Play some music (and sing along to it - LOUDLY!).

- Get out an exercise! It will take your mind off the things that worry you, and pushing yourself when you are feeling a little low, can give you the confidence that you have reached a challenge or completed a goal (however small it may be).

Visualization. Try setting a super specific goal—be as detailed as possible (one study suggests that the more detailed your vision of future success, the more confident you’ll feel  )—and imagine that you’ve achieved it. Throw in a positive affirmation, and go through this practice right before or right after you hit the sheets for sleep, ideally while looking at yourself in the mirror (e.g. putting on makeup or brushing your teeth) so that you can literally tell yourself what you’ll accomplish and why you rock.

- Practice the things you want to get better at. When you know that you CAN do the thing you are aiming for - that confidence soars!

From the lows to highs - what brings the positives back to 'squash' the negatives!

I feel as if the last few months have been a real roller-coaster.
I've felt excitement and elation; planning and looking ahead at what might lay before me in a new career path, a new hobby, a new connection with those around me and the feeling of being able to help others through coaching and counselling. I've also felt feelings of anxiety and unease at the thought of not knowing what I am going to do with my life, worrying about how I will fit in the changes I wish to make and how I foresee my future. At times, it certainly felt as if I was constantly pushing up-hill and feeling a sense of dissatisfaction with the routines and 'jobs' I had to do each day - to the point where I would burst into tears and have to be calmed down by my patient and caring boyfriend (for which I thank you for your compassion and strength to get me through those days!).

In sitting down over a nice cup of green tea after a long 'Sunday-run-day', I felt as if there was not a lot that was itching to get out of my head and onto paper (or blog). Usually, once I sit down and start putting fingers to the keyboard - it's as if the flood gates open and all of the built up thoughts and emotions of the last few days want to pour out in a mad rush!
However - today was different. I felt a sense of calmness. I didn't feel a sense of urgency to rid my mind of the built up thoughts. I felt a sense of content. I actually found myself hanging out the washing and sharing my thoughts of 'okayness' about the space I am in now at work (which - funnily enough has been the one thing that has brought me to tears many times this year!!), with my boyfriend - who again was left in a state of confusion about my indecisiveness about my life, the direction i want to go in and what i enjoy or don't enjoy!

So - I wondered what made things so different today? What have I changed, or has changed this past week to give me the sense of satisfaction and comfort that has left me feeling like I don't need to sharpen my nails to crawl out of the crazy hole of emotions that i have got myself into?

Perhaps I had actually started to take note of my own advice, putting my words into actions and focusing on changing the things I could change.
I decided to make a list of all the things that I feel have lead me to this positive space -

1) I changed my thoughts. I focused on the positive things around me, rather than just the negative and worrying about what is going to happen to me in the next few months/years. Hello!! How in the world can I worry about the things that haven't even happened yet! What a waste of energy over something that may never even eventuate. Sure - make plans to get to where you want to be, but spending time over-thinking this path is not productive in the slightest.

2) I made time for myself. Squeezing in the extra study and training hours, with full time work, own fitness and health as well as making sure I am spending time with my family is tough. I wouldn't let myself accept this and pushed, and pushed until I started getting sick, depressed and to the stage of bursting into tears for no reason. My family encouraged me to take a weekend (or even a day to begin with) off, so i spent it catching up with friends who I hadn't seen in months, having a couple of extra drinks with dinner, going out for slow walks and coffee dates, reading my long lost kindle. I needed to give myself some time to reflect and take in what was happening around me, instead of being caught up in what I wanted to be. Allow yourself time to refresh and get back to who you are.

3) I took some time to do the things I enjoy - and opened up my senses.  It's amazing how being busy can turn your brain into believing that you don't have time for the little things you enjoy. The thing is, without doing the things you enjoy, it takes away your own sense of you! It re-invigorates your soul and makes you even more powerful in whatever path you decide to take. I sucked in lungfuls of gorgeous morning air as I watched the sunrise. I took my time and ordered a 'have here' soy latte while I read the paper, rather than running in and out in haste with a take-away cup in hand before zooming off in my car. I sat outdoors and read my book in the sunshine - it's amazing how rejuvenating it is to have the sunlight streaming onto your bare skin.

4) I accept the thought that 'I am good enough'. The power of one subconscious thought had lead me to a place where I felt unwanted, lacking in skills in my workplace, unworthy of holding my leadership position in the office, too slow on my morning runs, unable to make the changes I wanted to make because I couldn't do it or didn't have the right skills and comparing myself to others. When my negative thoughts started to barrage into my head - I took a breathe and re-thought them. "OK, I didn't do that perfectly, but I will learn from it." Or instead of "I should have been able to deal with that student", it was "Lets think about how I can deal with this students differently, what resources do I need and who can i ask for assistance?".

5) I made sure that I looked after my body with nourishing and healthy food choices. I'm not normally a regular at MacDonald s or KFC, but I had started to drink on most nights of the week, and indulged in more sugar and processed foods than normal. My body started to feel this - resulting in lethargy, spikes in sugar levels and trouble with concentration. Your body needs fuel to run at it's peak - and filling it with metholated spirits or cheap and nasty old oil won't help you do this!

6) I started to do a quick 10-15 minute meditation track before I went to sleep. This helped me to clear the thoughts that had built up and were racing around my brain before i closed my eyes. It meant that I woke up less during the night thinking about the things I had to do the next day, and it also meant that i was waking up more refreshed after each sleep without having to spend all that extra energy worrying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoYnqvadurg , https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I_gj-eMefU , and The smiling mind are some examples for you to practice with.

7) I made a point of being more mindful. I didn't shove my lunch down my throat in a bid to try and get to my first class in time. I let myself sit down and look outside while at home for a few minutes without scanning my facebook or instagram. I just enjoyed the time I spent with out little 5  year old friend we have over on weekends and with my boyfriend rather than not listening to them speaking because I was too busy thinking about what I had to do in that day.

8) Change the 'I shoulds' to 'I coulds'. When you start thinking about the things you should be doing,  it starts to develop a sense of unnecessary guilt. 'I should' be doing the washing implies to your subconscious that you are too lazy, too busy, too messy to do the washing. Changing statements like this to 'I could do the washing', gives your subconscious a sense of power over your own actions and thoughts - it implies that you could do the washing, when you're ready.
Image result for positive changes quotes
So why not give some of them a try. I'm not implying that they are always easy changes to make to your routines, which in some of you have built up over years. But it sure is worth trying - small changes lead to big changes!

Remember - you cannot control the things around you, but you can control the thoughts and reactions you have to each situation. Your mind is most definitely a 'super - powerful' tool and the difference in letting you enjoy each moment, or creating havoc and anxiety within yourself.

Positive thinking - how the power of your own thoughts can change your life!

5.15am - Alarm goes off, and I scratch around to find my blaring I-phone to stop the alarm. I knock it off the bed side table and rummage around to try and find it. STOP - you'll wake up my sleeping beauty of a boyfriend (Too late, he's already groaning and rolling around the messed up bed). Ah - got it!

5.16am - I slide out of bed like a character from 'The matrix', and walk with squinted eyes and stiff joints to the nearby  bathroom.

5.43am - I'm buckled into my little Mazda 3, driving to my morning Pilates class as I try to psych myself up for another tough session with my 'awesome and most favorite' killer instructor.

6.05am - I walk into the fresh smelling and lit up studio and ask for a pass to the 6.15am class. "Oh, sorry - we are sold out today". My initial reaction was to say "Really?!" with a tone in my voice that expected the young receptionist to clear a place for me. I go to this class every Thursday morning, and have for the last 3 months, but there is no bed for ME? My first disappointment. I cringed to myself, but then took a deep breathe and accepted a pass to the next class in minutes time.

7.15am - Class completed; brow sweaty, legs burning and with a refreshed outlook on the day. I stride into the change rooms, open my gym bag and realize that I've left my entire toiletries bag at home. In a moment of panic I was about to run out the door to find the nearest chemist, supermarket - ANYTHING, to spend up and buy me all of the missing essentials. How was I supposed to go to work, as a Professional with no eyebrows, no eyelashes, eyeliner, no bronzer and with un-brushed hair and fury teeth??! I was certain that nobody had seen me without my 'beauty' on, they're going to look at me all day and ask if I was sick or tired? (Sure enough - my beloved year 7's without fail, and without disregard questioned why I looked so different and sick today! Thanks guys!).
I decided to take a deep breathe, pull up my big girl pants and take on the world with a 'No make-up Selfie' kind of attitude. Besides - I'm supposed to be a good role model for the students and young women I teach.

7.46am - I've been sitting waiting at this four way intersection for 15 minutes while 4 trains take their sweet, people transporting time to cross the road, making me late for work!
Happy Thursday everyone - I'd say it's going to be 'one of those days'.
Image result for positive thoughts
I could react in two different ways here - I could sit in the car and have a 'tanti' like a three year old child who didn't get the Baby born she really wanted, OR I could take a breathe, look at the sun, think about all the things I was going to do that day that were mildly positive and move on. Besides - surely after a bumpy start, the chances of anything else negative happening were fairly slim at this point, I hoped.

With my fresh outlook on the day, I look up from the steering wheel, and low and behold; it was one of the infamous 'Housewives of Melbourne' walking across the road in front of me! What a spot! Things are looking up already, I grinned to myself.

Ten minutes ago I was frustrated, disgruntled and ready to crawl back into the comfort of my bed - but at that point in time (at the peak of my annoyances), I chose to think differently. I changed my thoughts, which resulted in my change of emotions, feelings and optimism and my readiness to accept the positive parts of the day.
It's all too easy to get sucked in by a few bad events that have happened during the day, week or even year. The thing is - by letting these negative emotions be heard and take over your thoughts, you start to only notice the negative things around you. This sets a spiral of continuous negative thought processes that hinder your ability to deal with daily tasks, as well as effecting your confidence, self esteem, decision making skills and motivation for life.

We will never be able to have total control of the things that happen to us, no matter how well we plan or organize ourselves. The only thing we can change, is our thoughts and reaction to the things that happen to us.
When you start to focus on the great things that  are  happening around you, it branches out and spreads like wild fires until you begin to not even blink at the negative.

Start small - you might notice that the sun is shining, you went for a run, you had a nice conversation with a friend, your coffee tasted amazingly delish today, you got to spend a night out with the girls dancing to awesome 80's tracks at a seedy club. It can be as big or small as you like - but you just watch; positive thoughts breed more positive thoughts!

Think about where this issue sits on your life's 'catastrophe scale' - 1 being virtually no impact on you, and 100 being the most horrifying and terrible thing that could happen to you. Most people, realistically will only ever reach into their 80's at their worst when they put their experience in perspective.
Image result for positive thoughts
Start right now - when you notice yourself thinking negatively about things that happen to you (e.g You dropped the milk all over the floor, you can't get your hair to do anything you want or you have an argument with a family member), stop your thoughts there.

Now; either think about turning it into a more productive thought (e.g An argument can help to share your thoughts/emotions with another which can eventuate in making your relationship closer or solving the 'issue'), or take a breathe and think about at least one positive thing around you.

Try it today. As with anything, it can take practice, but life is much brighter, you will feel more motivated, productive and resilient.

Enjoy the positive side! x

Creating a change....

For many of us, we reach a point in our lives where we feel as if nothing is going right; our energy levels are low, we aren't enjoying our work, we don't have the same sense of contentedness with our friendship circles and we just feel a general sense of 'down' about life.
We have two choices here - to keep continuing on the path we are travelling; feeling down, isolated, and unmotivated OR, we can make a change/s to give ourselves a chance to live a life more satisfying, connected, happy and with color. I know which one I would rather choose - and life certainly seems a lot more exciting when you can wake up out of bed most days with vigor!

Creating change isn't always easy. To begin with, it's a good idea to have a vision in mind of the life or goal you want to achieve. Think about how this feels, how this looks, how this will effect you and the people around you. Think about what needs to change in your life to be able to get to this vision.

The next thing to keep in mind is that goals and visions will change many times throughout your life; you may reach a goal and need to create a new challenge or desire, your life priorities may change (particularly as you get older, and your living arrangements or lifestyle changes).
It is important to set aside some time when this does happen, or you begin to feel that faint feeling of 'down', lack of motivation and dissatisfaction with life again, to re-visit your initial goals.

Image result for creating change life                                      Image result for creating change life
The following steps can be helpful in how you can go about creating a change in your life, to be able to live one with more gusto, excitement, satisfaction, motivation and optimism!

1) Decide what you want to change.
2) Ask yourself why you want this change.
3) What else could you change if you made this change?
4) What do you envisage your life will look like after you make this change?
5) What could get in the way?
6) What  are your strengths? (Yes - we all have some!!)
7) What have you succeeded in before?
8) What quality/talent did that take?
9) How can you use that to help you now?
10) Do you think you would be more likely and able to make changes with some outside assistance/encouragement?
Image result for creating change life
It is helpful to keep  in mind that the following things can also have an impact on your ability to make changes, and to change your thought processes when difficulties do arise; our resilience, adaptability, resignation and acceptance.

Resilience encompasses the ability of an individual to be able to 'bounce back' from one of life's set backs. Creating a new vision will give us back our optimism and drive to get back to it!
Being able to adapt to changes in circumstances are also helpful. If we have one goal and are not flexible in our thinking or have got to the point where our original goal has become irrelevant to our lives, then we are more likely to lose our zest for life and disillusioned.
Resignation tends to gives us a feeling of hopelessness, that we are residing to the fact that we could not reach our goal or vision, which can increase risk of developing depression and anxiety.
Acceptance that we cannot change and control everything, but that we can change our thoughts and feelings towards our vision. It is much more productive to redirect your thoughts and energy towards the things we can change.

Good luck change makers!!!

When life gets in the way....

I left home for my usual Sunday Pilates workout this morning feeling consumed of emotion; confused, not sure whether to be angry, frustrated, upset, happy or jovial. Yes, I was about to have my beloved, monthly lady friend, and yes this often adds an extra dimension to my personality; almost as if a hint of Bipolar disorder has awoken from it's dormant state in the other three weeks of each month - girls, I know you understand what this means!
But something bothered me. And to be honest, I felt excruciatingly guilty that it bothered me and made me so uneasy.
I am so very lucky to have the life that I do - I have an absolutely beautiful, caring, loyal, trusting and soul matching man in my life. We get to look after his energetic, giggly, independent, footy loving 5 year old Son each Friday to Sunday. I have a full time job that pays all of my bills. I am in great health, have an amazing and supportive family and some good friends at which I can spend hours catching up and laughing over the silly things we have done in the week before our brunch and soy latte dates. I have found some new passions - of which excite me and turn any frown into a goofy 'my first boy crush', first time stepping out of the house wearing make-up grin - in Pilates, Wellness, Fitness and Health.

But something about having our little buddy around yelling in excitement of all the things we had to do today (which entailed get a milkshake, get some footy cards, play drive-way footy, play mini-golf, play some more drive-way footy in between the dropping in of the proud grandparents, Aunties and Uncles to visit him), and coming home to our humble little abode where every square inch of the floor was filled with toys, footy cards and clothes just made me uncomfortable. I desperately wanted to get into a new career path. I knew what area I wanted to head, as I embarked on my quest to become a Life/Wellness Coach, P.T and Pilates Instructor as well as having an active blog and corresponding social media sites, websites and online courses - but fitting this in with full time work, training, studying, family and social life was proving very difficult.
 Image result for busy
I suppose I was partly frustrated and nervous about the fact that I wanted to change my career in many ways, and I was worried about fitting the time in when I am only now a 'weekend Mum' - yet I still wanted to have a family of my own in years to come. It worried me and gave me a sense of guilt for taking the frustrations out on the little ray of sunshine around our place - but life certainly become a little more hectic and you had to be very giving and sharing of the space and time you once had. I just wanted to make sure I could make the changes necessary to bound into my new career  path with great success, but not at the expense of the things that are  dear and important to me - my family, friends and passions.

I have learnt from experience that going in head first until the point that you can't breathe, and every spare moment you get from the training/study time you only want to spend by yourself to give your over-active mind a rest, as you fall asleep or collapse on the couch (usually with a headache or sore throat of a run-down and looming illness on your doorstep), so I know the value of being able to give yourself some space and time to catch up and relax with friends and family. It gives you the space to remind you of what matters in life, and re-charges your soul to get back to business - rather than simply forcing yourself to go through the motions day in, day out.

Anyway - after our early walk up the street to start the days 'to-do list' according to our five year old, I felt a tightness in my throat and little sneaky tear starting to well at the back of my eye and a little tiny 'grumpy snap' towards my laid back man, as I started to worry about how I would fit my passion into my life. Of course, if full time work wasn't on the scene, there would be a lot more time to fulfill these. But until my passions became my work, that was not an option. I tried to go through the thought process of how I might fit this passion and career change into my life considering the non-negotiables - family time and full time work being the two biggest.

Weekends were generally filled with jobs you don't have time to do during the week, keeping the little guy occupied, training hours, driving time (I will happily pay someone to invent a teleportation device 50% of my life earnings!!!!) and trying to potentially grab a coffee or wine with a girlfriend.
That generally left finding a window of time either between teaching Physical Education and Health classes, counselling the Year 7 students through 'he said, she said and she looked at me' issues, driving, spending some alone time with my main man, cooking and preparing meals or after a busy day of waking at 5.15am - I'll admit, it was proving to be difficult. It would be okay if we could switch on our inspiration and creative juices on demand - but unfortunately it doesn't work like that.
You almost need to let your brain escape, get out of the house, get yourself into a meditative state and clean out the thoughts of life with a broom and shovel.

But squeezing in the rest is still in progress.
For now - I need to take a breathe, look at the amazing things that are in my life and dabble into the various passions and missions I have given myself when I can.
